How to schedule your free local pickup
1. Tell us about your Virginia vehicle
Start by sharing a few basics about your car, truck, SUV, or van—year, make, model, general condition, and where it’s located in Virginia. Whether you’re in Norfolk, Fairfax, Lynchburg, or a rural county, this helps us plan the right tow truck and timing for your free local pickup.
2. Choose a pickup time that fits your schedule
We’ll work with you to set a day and time window for pickup that fits your life. In busier areas like Virginia Beach, Arlington, and Henrico, we account for traffic and parking. In more remote areas, we coordinate routes so a local driver can still reach you promptly.
3. Prepare the keys, title, and access
Before your tow operator arrives, clear personal items from the vehicle and have the keys and Virginia title ready if available. Let us know about gate codes, garage access, HOA rules, or tight driveways so the driver can safely reach and load your vehicle.
4. Meet the driver—or authorize a no-contact pickup
You can be present to sign the tow paperwork, or, in many Virginia locations, authorize a contactless pickup if the title and keys are accessible. The local driver will load your vehicle and provide basic documentation of the pickup on the spot when possible.
5. We handle sale, proceeds, and your tax receipt
AutoHeritage Donate arranges the sale of your vehicle, and the net proceeds support Heritage for the Blind’s programs for people who are blind or visually impaired. You’ll receive a tax receipt—typically at least $500—and amounts over $500 are reported on IRS Form 1098-C for your records.

Tight city streets, alleys, and one-way blocks
Tip: In dense areas like Old Town Alexandria, downtown Norfolk, or the Fan in Richmond, flatbeds can struggle with narrow streets and heavy parking. If possible, park your vehicle in an open spot or nearby side street and tell us exactly where it will be so the driver can access it safely.
Gated communities, HOAs, and parking decks
Tip: Many Virginia communities in places like Ashburn, Short Pump, and Virginia Beach have gate codes, security, or garage height limits. Share gate codes, visitor instructions, or garage clearance details in advance so we can send the right truck and avoid delays at pickup time.
Very rural or mountainous locations
Tip: If you live along winding mountain roads near Blacksburg, Abingdon, or in the Shenandoah Valley, routing a flatbed can take longer and may require daylight scheduling. Let us know about steep driveways, soft ground, or private roads so we can plan safely and set a realistic pickup window.
Missing title or Virginia DMV paperwork issues
Tip: We can often still help if your title is misplaced, but it may affect timing. Check with the Virginia DMV for duplicate title options and current plate return guidance, and let us know your situation so we can explain what’s typically needed for a smooth donation transfer.
If at-home pickup is tricky
If an at-home pickup is difficult—maybe your vehicle is in a tight garage in Arlington, on blocks at a shop in Chesapeake, or stuck on family property in rural Buckingham County—there are still options. In many cases, we can coordinate with your mechanic or storage lot to meet the tow truck there. If you’re near a major route like I-95, I-64, or I-81, we may suggest moving the vehicle to a more accessible roadside or lot. Our team will walk through your specific situation and help you choose a safe, realistic pickup plan that still keeps your donation local to Virginia.
